Orange is the New Black star Samira Wiley and her wife Lauren Morelli have announced the arrival of their first daughter George Elizabeth.
Wiley took to Instagram to share the happy news with the world, writing: “Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after labouring for almost three days gave birth to our first child — our gorgeous daughter, George.
“Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for.”
Baby George was born on 11 April but the couple waited until Mother’s Day (in the US) to announce her.
Morelli also posted the photo to her Instagram. She wrote: “Four weeks ago today, our daughter came into the world and changed everything. We are so happy, so grateful, and so tired.”
Both received well wishes and congratulations on their posts by the likes of Lena Waithe, Christian Siriano and Thandiwe Newton.
Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli married in 2017 after meeting on the set of Orange is the New Black in 2012, where Morelli worked as a writer. In 2018, Wiley admitted she “was definitely having thoughts about wanting to have a family”.
Wiley said she was attracted to Morelli through her writing before they even met: “I was really attracted to Lauren’s mind first before I met Lauren the person.
“I got her script and I was like: ‘This person’s really talented, I can’t wait to meet this person.’”
When they met on set, Wiley was immediately sold, she told BUST Magazine.
“I just remember her coming to set and me being able to watch her be a boss from afar, telling whatever people to go this way, answering this question,” said the actress.
“Just seeing her literally be the person in charge was really attractive to me.”
Since her portrayal of Poussey Washington on Orange is the New Black, Wiley has starred in The Handmaid’s Tale, You’re the Worst and recently in Will & Grace as Karen’s first lesbian kiss.
Wiley latest film Breaking News in Yuba County was released in February. It produced by Jake Gyllenhaal and featured an all-star cast including Allison Janney, Mila Kunis, Awkwafina, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.
She also stars in two films being released later this year: BIOS with Tom Hanks and Red, White and Water with Jennifer Lawrence.
